On Point

2017 BFA Exhibition at Cornish College of the Arts
Mixed Media Sculpture: lumber, yarn, flagging tape, paint, plasti-dip, twine

On Point is a series of sculptures that combine materials and processes to dispel traditional masculine and feminine modes of making.   I start each piece from the perspective of a painter, building  a series of lines drawn in three-dimensional space, finding new and interesting relationships. Discovering the delicate balance and tension between these forms through contrasting materials is a dynamic that drives this body of work.

I use a system of intuitive decisions and calculated editing to arrive at unpredictable results. Pieces of lumber are cut at random and then combined until a form appears that is in someway suggestive; Similarly, softer materials are crocheted in a manner with little thought to their eventual context. After this stage, each element is carefully edited, and in some cases woven together, to visually articulate a dynamic relationship. It is only after stepping back from the intimacy of each piece that the overall relationships reveal something to me. In the form of light, line, form, and color I see both the anxieties and the joys of my experience reflected back at me. Each sculpture is a frozen representation of my energy or experience at the time of its creation.
