Three Rules Collaboration
2014
1. Each painter must work on three panels, which will not be touching in the final piece (panels will be assigned randomly).
2. The only colors permitted are blue, yellow, black, white, and a red of each painters choice (the primaries must not be mixed).
3. Each panel must be painted so that upon final assembly they form a collective inner red square.
In collaboration with Mia Gjerde (panels with shapes) and Jack Kenna (panels with white drawings on colored squares), the three of us chose the rules for our system based on the fact that each of us has a completely different way of painting and on the want for having a cohesive final piece. Our rules were a way of creating a neutral ground for us all to build off of with enough freedom for artistic interpretation and enough boundaries to bring all nine panels together in the end. The three by three format of the piece was simply the easiest way to grid multiple pieces from each of us.
