Unravel
2016
Sometimes we say or think things that cause us to feel guilty or would otherwise give others cause to reproach us for speaking. While considering phrases that are often left unspoken, each of these objects were crocheted to represent that phrase in some abstract form. The forms took shape based on feelings, thoughts, or direct imagery associated with that particular phrase. After documenting each piece, the objects were then unraveled and the yarn re-purposed to take new form. The ultimate form of the yarn itself is a tightly woven ball as means of tidying up the mess made within both the physical and mental process of making and unmaking objects.
The process of Unravel is about the impermanence of objects and fueled by the placement of high-value on physical labor. Objects, thoughts, and moments are each more fleeting than the next, but we have convinced ourselves that attachment to these things is possible. By unravelling the object and, by virtue, unraveling the thought I am acknowledging their impermanence and allowing myself-an artist who makes objects and places importance on thoughts-to let go. Having the objects then only exist through documentation is much like how memories and experiences live on through photographs, but the moments, the objects, themselves will never exist again.

Using two spools of yarn, objects are made, unmade, and then remade into new objects. This project is investigating the re-purposing of materials, the idea of detachment to materials, and what it means philosophically to do these things as they pertain to time and entropy.
